S7-200 PPI vs. MPI: Key Differences & Microwin Configuration

Both PPI (Point-to-Point Interface) and MPI (Multi-Point Interface) are serial communication protocols for S7-200 PLCs, but differ in network topology and capabilities.

  • PPI: Primarily for direct PLC-to-PLC or PLC-to-HMI connections. Uses a dedicated link. Simpler, but limited to a single partner.
  • MPI: Allows multiple devices on a single serial line (RS-485). Requires address assignment to each device. Supports more complex networks.

Beyond Token Handling: MPI offers increased network flexibility and allows communication with Programming Devices (PGs) without requiring dedicated connections like PPI often does. PPI is generally more robust for basic point-to-point tasks.

Selecting PPI or MPI in Microwin

In Microwin, the protocol selection is done during the configuration of the serial interface (usually COM1).

  1. Go to Parameters -> Communication.
  2. Select the COM port you're using.
  3. Choose either PPI or MPI from the 'Protocol' dropdown menu.
  4. For MPI, configure the node address of the PLC under the 'MPI Parameters' section.
