IOT2020 / IOT2040: System protection Preferences Intended For the Iot2000

Hi community,
as you know we provide an Example Image for the IOT2000. As you know as well, using it "as it is" is not that secure, for instance there is only the root account without password by default.
For solving this and other things, that might affect security, I prepared a document with the most usual settings you can do to improve the security of the device.
Keep in mind that these settings are only examples you can do and of course there is no claim to completeness (I think there is no completeness at all for the security topic).
See it as little guidance and if you have other tips, please share them with us
Best regards!

Batch Tag Import via S7 Communication

You've correctly identified a limitation with batch tag import over S7 communication. If a single tag in the batch doesn't exist in the PLC, the entire import fails silently – there's no specific error identifying the problematic tag.

This behavior is typical. Siemens TIA Portal/Step 7 doesn't natively provide a mechanism for partial batch import with error reporting for individual tag failures during S7 communication-based imports.

Workarounds & Considerations:

  • Smaller Batches: Reduce the batch size to identify problematic tags more easily.
  • Pre-Validation: Before importing, cross-reference your tag list against the PLC's symbol table (using tools within TIA Portal or Step 7).
  • Alternative Methods: Consider importing tags via other methods (e.g., manual configuration in TIA Portal, CSV import if supported by your specific TIA Portal version, or using Siemens Protocol Suite).

For detailed information on S7 communication and tag handling, please refer to the SiePortal documentation:

Securing Your IoT2000: A Community Guide

A document outlining security best practices for the Siemens IoT2000 has been shared by a community member.

The guide addresses initial security concerns like the default root account (no password) and provides example settings to improve device security. It's important to note this is not an exhaustive list, as security is a continually evolving topic.

Consider this a starting point for hardening your IoT2000. Community contributions and further research are highly encouraged!

You can find more information and support resources on the Siemens Industry Online Support portal (SiePortal).
