Motion Control System SIMOTION: External Position sensor Fault

Greetings.  I am having a problem with an occasional error on an external encoder but I cannot locate what is the specific error.  The Encoder.error = YES and there is a value of 16#20 in Encoder.errorGroup but that doesn't have much information (see attached image). How do find what is specifically causing the error?
The encoder is TTL incremental connected through a SMC30 module to a D435.
Thanks in advance.
Rudolph.

Encoder Error Troubleshooting - D435 & SMC30

Greetings Rudolph,

The Encoder.error = YES with Encoder.errorGroup = 16#20 indicates a general error within the encoder functionality. To pinpoint the specific cause, you need to consult the TIA Portal documentation for error group 20 and your encoder type.

Here’s how to proceed:

  1. Refer to the Manual: Check the documentation for your specific encoder model (TTL incremental) and the SMC30/D435 combination within TIA Portal. Look for details on error group 20.
  2. Diagnostic Buffer: Investigate the diagnostic buffer for the encoder channel in TIA Portal. This often provides more granular error information than Encoder.errorGroup alone.
  3. SMC30/D435 Configuration: Verify your encoder configuration within the SMC30 module and D435 faceplate. Confirm correct signal assignment (A, B, Z) and parameter settings.
  4. Wiring Check: Inspect the wiring between the encoder and the SMC30 for any loose connections or signal integrity issues.
  5. SiePortal Knowledge Base: Search SiePortal using keywords like "D435 encoder error 20" or "SMC30 encoder troubleshooting" for relevant FAQs and solution articles.

Please provide the exact encoder model number for more specific guidance.

Sincerely,

Siemens Self Support
